ERODING CRITICAL RIGHTS & PROTECTIONS FROM THE BENCH

Trump Judges’ Decisions

The Alliance for Justice Action Campaign has closely scrutinized senators’ votes as Republican leadership has fast-tracked the confirmation of 200 of President Trump’s judicial picks, including Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh. These judges had records demonstrating that they would pose a severe threat to the rights of women, workers, people of color, LGBTQ Americans, immigrants, consumers, and the environment. From the rulings we’ve now seen from these judges, our cause for concern was more than justified. Gorsuch and Kavanaugh have already fulfilled predictions that their rulings would roll back hard-won rights and freedoms. Furthermore, many of their dissents foreshadow the grave threat to our rights if Trump is able to confirm more Supreme Court Justices.

The story of Trump’s impact on the courts, however, goes well beyond the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court decides fewer than 100 cases each year. In contrast, nearly 50,000 cases are filed in federal courts of appeals and over 390,000 are filed in district courts every year. For most Americans, the lower courts have the final say on their rights under the Constitution and whether critical legal protections will be properly enforced.

See the record of Trump’s 15 worst judges before they were nominated on healthcare, LGBTQ rights, reproductive rights, the environment, worker & consumer rights, police misconduct, and voting rights.

Unfortunately, Trump judges are already negatively impacting the rights and legal protections of everyday Americans. Click on an issue below to see how.
