FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 4, 2025 – With eyes largely on governor and mayoral races today, Pennsylvania also had an important retention election for three Democratic Supreme Court Justices: Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht. Voters retained all three, ensuring that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court can continue to do its essential work protecting democracy and civil rights. In particular, the court has played a key role in cases involving gerrymandering, voting rights, and election challenges that have ensured fair representation and access to the polls across the commonwealth.
Tish Gotell Faulks, state courts director for the Alliance for Justice Action Campaign, issued the following statement:
“Today, Pennsylvania reminded us of the important role everyday voters have in ensuring a fair judiciary. Justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht have done such important work on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and deserved to be retained. They can now continue to protect every person entitled to due process under the law, defend our democracy from the perils of a policy agenda that abandons people in favor of corporations and billionaires, and continue safeguarding fundamental rights across the great commonwealth. With little else on the ballot, voters turned out to protect the court from preying special interests eager to undermine justice and impose an extremist agenda. We now look forward to 2026 and the 63 state supreme court seats across 33 states that will be on the line. We need every voter to show up as a ‘courts voter’ ready to protect our judicial system.”
