North Carolina Supreme Court Election

Incumbent Justice Allison Riggs is the best chance at stopping the ultraconservative MAGA takeover of North Carolina.

Riggs joined the court in 2023 after her appointment by Gov. Roy Cooper (D). Prior to joining the supreme court, Riggs served as judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. Riggs spent 14 years advocating for marginalized and disenfranchised communities at the Southern Coalition for Social Justice. She fought for North Carolinians’ voting rights and civil rights in front of judges in the state all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. On the bench, Riggs stood against the court’s ultraconservative majority as a voice of dissent and gave every individual a voice in the justice system.

Republican Candidate: Judge Jefferson Griffin

Judge Jefferson Griffin currently serves on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. Griffin won election to that seat in 2020. Prior to the court of appeals, Griffin was a judge on the Wake County District Court bench. Gov. Pat McCrory (R) appointed Griffin to the bench in 2015. Before becoming a judge, Griffin was an assistant Wake County prosecutor. Throughout his legal career, Griffin made clear his support for originalism, a judicial interpretation that poses a threat to many freedoms and rights for women, people of color, and LBGTQ+ individuals. Griffin even joined an anti-abortion decision supporting the idea that life begins at conception.
